Kaiser Permanente (Acute Care)
I was a clinical intern at a local hospital, Kaiser Permanente, in Walnut Creek. There, I worked with a plethora of patients with various nutrition diagnoses, created individualized medical nutrition therapies. I practiced calculating tubefeeds, and total parenteral nutrition for those who needed it most. This rotation was extremely beneficial to not only my learning as an intern, but also to my motivation as a future RD. I know now, how vital my work in preventative care will be! |

Webster House Health Center (Long Term Care Facility)
I had the pleasure of working with an old college colleague for my final rotation. Stephanie has such a strong sense of compassion and respect for her residents. The Webster House Health Center feels so much like home thanks to Stephanie and her amazing team.
During this rotation I was exposed to various types of charting, which depended upon the level of care a resident was to receive. At the Webster House there is independent living and assisted living which was further divided by a post acute care center and a long term care center. Interning on the various floors exposed me to the copious types of rehab available for their residents. Each month Stephanie and the dietary team are implementing new and exciting ways to keep residents happy. For example, a Hydration cart was implemented during my time there. Since hydration is especially crucial and most at risk with the elderly population, three times a day a cart with fruit infused water, a few snack options and a newspaper circle each floor to encourage residents to drink more water. On Fridays they have an ice cream social! Don't worry, sugar-free and thickened ice creams are also available to include those on a more restrictive diet. Not only are there new projects such as this, constantly flowing through this facility, but monthly wellness talks are available for residents and staff to learn more about how to take better care of themselves by gaining strength and remaining healthy. Care conferences and Nutrition Alert meeting s help the RD's keep the staff aware of weight trends and possible wound risks. Finally, working so closely with the kitchen staff truly makes Stephanie loved by all! She is an amazing RD, care taker and interdisciplinary team member! By the end of this rotation, I was ready to pack my bags and move in with the residents to be taken care of by Stephanie and her Webster House staff, that is just how great they all are! |
